Backbone – Whale Vertebrae Diptych

Backbone is inspired by the monumental scale and organic forms of the whale vertebrae.

Sabina’s relief printmaking background informs how each vertebrae panel is presented, reflecting unique aspects of the printmaking process. The left panel references the carved block created in relief with variations in surface depths, colours and materials. And, the right panel mirrors the ‘hand-pulled’ print from the inked block, the smooth surface suggests the printed paper. These vertebrae are uniquely expressed through routered lines and aluminum inlays.
