Table with Area Rug — Bentwood

Sabina Hill

Commissioned by Global Affairs Canada for the Official Residence, Berlin, Germany. Table and rug are designed to read as one integrated artwork: riffing on the traditional cedar bentwood box, the profile of the table top and inlays on the legs reference the distinctive northwest coast flared box lid and operculum shell details; and, the hand tufted 12 foot square 100% New Zealand wool area rug expresses the bentwood box (mirrored and in plan view) with the red form that bisects the carpet showing the flared lid in side view. Saturated colours were selected—it's Berlin, after all—to complement the yellow bear sculpture that shares the foyer with the Bentwood table and rug. Sabina's signature 'textured adzed' pattern borders the abstracted motifs. Silk 'operculum' details are raised slightly to capture the light.
